LISA JOHNSON MAKEUP ARTIST Make Up For Ever Spring/Summer 2012 Aqua Shadows The hunt for waterproof, long lasting eye makeup brings me to the new Make Up For Ever additions to their Aqua line. Check out their 12 new offerings ~ B+ If long lasting, waterproof proof eye makeup is one of your top priorities, the newest Make Up For Ever collection, Aqua Shadows is sure to please - with a little tweaking.... MY REVIEW ~ I found these fairly easy to apply and blend before they became "set". These performed best for me up to 5 hours without creasing. The matte are truly matte and highly pigmented - however, I think setting these with shadow will improve their wearability. The pearl shades are medium pigmented and very buildable - with a beautiful sheen - these tend to last longer than the matte shadows in my view and are very wearable day and night. I recommend these for summer heat waves, swimming, high humidity days and hot sultry evenings dancing the night away. B+ Having worked on several underwater fashion shoots myself, I can testify to their lasting ability - within the limits I described. Useful in humidity and high heat environments - and the color payoff is great. 0E Matte black 2E Matte brown 4E Matte taupe grey 6E Matte navy blue 8E Matte green 20E Pearly taupe 22E Pearly coper 24E Pearly pink 26E Pearly peach 28E Pearly beige 30E Pearly pink beige 32E Pearly white Simplify your summer makeup routine with any of these twelve dazzling, waterproof eyeshadows - offered in matte and pearl textures - new additions to their Aqua collection. $20.00 each photo credit: make up for ever www.makeupforever.com make up for ever, aqua shadows, nashville makeup, florida makeup, california makeup, waterproof makeup, spring 2012 makeup, summer 2012 makeup, 2012 makeup trends

Two of my favorite - little known - mascara products to try for Spring 2011
There
are SO many incredible new products out each season and mascara is no
exception - you can find many great mascaras at any price point from
drugstore finds to dept store and boutique finds. Finding just the
right formula, color, texture and type takes a little trial and error.
I carry these in my kit as well as
the usual suspects I adore that are more popular - such as Dior Show, L'Oreal Voluminous,
Lancome Definicils, and many more. You might just like these too... and
don't just stick with black - try blue, purple, aubergine and dark
brown (lower lash trick)... add to your mascara "wardrobe" for fun!
Publicity Stunt Lashes WOW! kinda lashes that last! 3-Day Long-Wearing Mascara
LORAC’S NEW BREAKTHROUGH MASCARA PULLS A PUBLICITY STUNT…UNBELIEVABLY GORGEOUS LASHES THAT LAST UP TO 3 DAYS!
This revolutionary 3-Day Long-Wearing Mascara creates long, lush lashes
that are gym-proof, cry-proof and Red Carpet beauty-proof. Its ultra
lightweight long-wearing formula is loaded with natural ingredients,
created from an innovative new technology, allows you to take a break
from re-applying your mascara every day without it smudging, budging or
flaking for up to 3 days.
My heart belongs to BUXOM!
A paraben-free, lash-volumizing mascara.
Bare Escentuals Buxom® Lash Mascara - Blackest Black holds the style of
your lashes for a continuous 12 hours with no flakiness. The silky,
vitamin-rich formula darkens, lengthens, and thickens from root to tip
without ever clumping. Its patented, hourglass-shaped brush is designed
to lift and separate every lash while delivering the perfect amount of
antioxidant-rich mascara needed for bigger, fuller lashes.
Give these two a try next time you're looking for MASCARA's off the beaten track!

An "obsession" among brides If you think you've been obsessing about your hair and makeup, you're not alone. No longer content to simply hire a stylist and makeup artist for the big day and cross the task from their lists, brides are booking with beauty pros months — occasionally, years — before their nuptials. By forming a close bond with their beauty team brides hope to resolve ahead of time such questions as "Should I grow out my hair for the wedding? How do I want my makeup to appear? How will I look in my pictures?" Makeup artists are responding by providing more customized services, and increasingly, offering their expertise for the other events surrounding the wedding, from the bridesmaids' luncheon to the engagement photos. I think with the greater focus today on celebrities, there is a heightened awareness among brides of the detail that goes into hair and makeup. They also see there's no longer such a thing as bridal hair or bridal makeup (thankfully!) and there is more of a range of modern styles to choose from. I've been very lucky, having done destination weddings in the Caribbean, Mexico, California and New York. I'm known for my elegant natural bridal beauty as well and calming demeanor, which go a long way toward easing wedding-day jitters. I'm usually a good person to calm the bride, especially when she's far from home, because I'm sort of the neutral party there. The trial run through Brides are consulting makeup artists earlier than in the past. Some up to three and six months ahead, though some brides schedule a makeup run-through even before they book the reception site. These run-throughs are strongly encouraged by makeup pros. After a trial the bride is relaxed and happy to see me coming through the door on her wedding day, because she's already confident about what I'll be doing. Savvy brides tend to already have an idea of what they want, and need some help fine-tuning their vision. Usually a woman who comes to me is very detail-oriented, and so we'll do a run-through first. Plus, she needs to feel good about the people working with her that day. The makeup artist and the hairdresser are going to be working very close to her, so she needs to feel comfortable with them. More brides are viewing their makeup as crucial to the look of the event. When somebody is getting married at Cheekwood and spending $50,000 for her gown, it's a comparatively small amount of time and expense to make sure you have a makeup artist and hairdresser who's taking good care of you. Just as brides collect photos of hairstyles they like, they should do the same with makeup looks. It's good to have a visual like magazine tearsheets, because your idea of a smoky eye might be different from mine. The beauty team Though a bride may be in love with a look that's hot this season, pro makeup artists advise against following anything too current, at least when it comes to the wedding day. I like to notice the woman, not the makeup ~ so I generally do a very natural bride. I make sure the skin looks really perfect and the colors are of nature. Nothing too trendy or dated. Picking the right beauty team for your wedding may be one of the most important things you do. At the end of the day, all you have are your photographs, and if you hate your hair and makeup that will haunt you forever.

Okay, a little levity and fun here! When preparing for your wedding many women think this means more makeup, more hair. Think again... :: THESE IMAGES ARE DEFINATE DON'Ts (except for Liz) :: DON'T 1. Too Much! — Less is more. Let your makeup and hair compliment YOU, your dress and accessories. You want a complete and finished look that compliments you and makes you feel at ease. Ahem... DON'T 2. Too Trendy — Sure today everyone is wearing Hello Kitty pearly pink, but 5 years from now you want to look at photos that have a timeless, classic and clean face. Don’t "date" your photos with super shimmer. Go with matte, neutral makeup colors and textures - you'll thank me later. DON'T 3. Makeup that is not you —If you never wear much makeup, don’t walk down the aisle or show up at a party looking like you lost a fight with a Drag Queen. Let your professional makeup artist help you determine the most flattering makeup look for you. Or as I always say - You, only better! ;) Fabulous! NOT... DON'T 4. Matchy-Matchy — Let your wedding party keep their personalities (and dignity) in tact and wear looks that suit them. Don’t give everyone bright shadows to match the dresses. Also, and I'm just going to say it - don't let that one friend who wants to shine above THE BRIDE do so. You know the one! Keep a cohesive, polished look for the entire party. That way everyone will get their chance to shine - especially for the formal pictures. Again, pretty and classic will win the day for most all weddings. (Yes, I'm showing bridesmaid dresses, but I think you get my point.) DON'T 5. Waiting until the last minute to look for your hair and makeup artist — I get a lot of last minute, frantic wedding day makeup inquiries. Please look a year ahead or so to find and book your wedding makeup artist and hairstylists - if you're spending a small fortune on wedding photos - do hire a professional to be a part of your "team". Compared to florals - which don't last past the week (don't get me wrong, florists are essential too) - your makeup and hair will be showcased in your photos for life. Just a consideration. :) Liz or Donatella? Which one are you? DON'T 6. Doing Too Much — so many brides rush out at the last minute to do too much - spray on tans, fake nails, facials - and end up with major flare ups, skin eruptions, bad tan jobs, etc. You've seen the pictures. You've heard the stories. Try not to deviate from you regular skincare routine. Continue to eat well, exercise, drink lots and lots of water, sleep 8+ hours (ha!) and try to avoid excessive intake of alcohol and caffeine (haha!) This is a MAJOR NO-NO to do too much all at once. Plan months ahead for any of your skin care changes, tanning (please don't be an OOMPALOOMPA!) and such. Please be a Liz and NOT a Donatella - in the tanning department...just sayin... DON'T 7. No Touch Ups — any great makeup artist will tell you that you do need a touch up or two. You will need blotting papers or powder to control face shine before photos, lipstick to reapply. Have a designated "beauty helper" to keep an eye out for you if they see you may need a little something and touch up. DON'T 8. Wrong look for you and your wedding style — magazines are great tools for inspiration - but remember we're talking about models, plastic surgery in some cases AND major photography editing - plus what looks good on someone in a magazine may not suit you. A common mistake is choosing a look that is super glamorous for their simple garden theme (the smokey eye and the pale Pam Anderson lip are common- OY!) Coordinate your look to the time of your event and wedding. And remember you can NEVER go wrong with classic clean beauty for your wedding. (I love Pammy, but not for most wedding looks... unless it's Vegas!) DON'T 9. Too shiney — I haven’t met a bride who didn’t want a “dewey” shining cheek. Careful because it can look super oily in photos. Opt with a small bit of highlighting on cheekbones or eyes, but not your entire face. This is the time to ditch the mineral makeup look as well - shimmer is not your friend for pictures. Pro brands are your friend and a professional makeup artist will know these particular brands (not retail, generally). Careful - slippery gloss ahead... DON'T 10. Sticky situation — Weddings mean you kiss a lot and tend to dance a whole lot! Smears are not fun. Keep lips creamy, stained or matte for best results. Too much gloss is just a sticky mess usually - difficult to maintain. YOU, only better! TM

Oh how I adore my iPhone for so many reasons - but that little thing takes amazing pictures too! Not bad for a non professional - and it's SO handy for before and after shots for my bridal business and clients.
Here are a few before&afters; I took this past weekend of bridal clients for their trial makeup (w/theirpermission of course!!)~
Jennifer is such a funny, sweet and outgoing bride - she wanted something softly dramatic - so we opted for a modified smokey cat eye. Her wedding will be VERY dramatic in the evening and with red and black lace bridesmaids gowns - slated to be in the Fall this year. Cannot WAIT to see how amazing this wedding will be and how gorgeous Jennifer and her bridesmaids will look! Jenna Hayek from Polished Salon, who I work with a LOT will be doing their hair - so stay tuned for the wedding before & afters! Jennifer wanted an oh so slight cat eye. I used a ton of shades in black shimmer from Lancome (The New Black), Yaby Pearl Paints in lilac, LORAC shimmer golds and peaches, Maybelline Aubergine Liner and tons of Lancome Hypnose mascara - drew in her brow a tad and viola. Smashbox Primer in Green (to cut back on her red tendency), Cinema secrets cream foundation, Yaby and Graftobian dual finish powder foundation, Camera Ready and Lancome glosses and nude lip liner. A bit of Nixie cream blush brushed on just a tad in a peachy browny pink (can't remember the name) She's a stunner, just like her amazing personality too! www.bridesbylisa.com Mary Malone of Brides by Mary will be doing Rayna's hair and I cannot wait for her beautiful wedding before & after too!~*~*~*~*~*~
Rayna is such a sweet, kind and amazing woman. She is so totally fit and down to earth. She is a fitness and wellness expert and has her own business in East Nashville. She rarely wears makeup and wanted something to make her eyes pop while giving her complexion a glow. Her gown is this amazingly floaty dress, with one shoulder of delicate flowers that trail all the way down the back of her gown...this will be an amazing bride on her wedding day too! She loved her makeup! (So do I.) Rayna wanted a soft yet dramatic eye and romantic look to compliment her dress. We used brownish plum shadows to line her eye an customized shadows by Yaby - Camera Ready and Lancome lipglosses custom mixed, Nars Orgasm blush, St...ila Bronzer, Cinema Secretsfoundation and Loose Powder in no color. Lancome Hypnose Mascara to top off her lashes. Rayna has large deep set eyes, so my focus was to call attention to them by using light eyeshadows to bring her eye forth without overwhelming her crease. ~*~*~*~*~*~I will be posting more (with the brides permissions, of course) before&afters of my brides and clients in the days to come. It's fun and I think everyone loves a good before and after. Let me know if you have any makeup questions or concerns you'd like me to talk about in a blog and I'll do my best to help! Contact me today to book YOUR beautiful before&after too - YOU, only better! www.bridesbylisa.com

THE BASIC RITUAL ~A good cleanser appropriate for your skin-type - am & pm. ~Make-up remover and cleanser at night. ~Toner for your skin type - NON ALCOHOL after cleansing. ~Daily moisturizer appropriate for your current skin. ~A weekly or 2x weekly mask to deep clean and nurture. ~A GENTLE exfoliant once to several times a week. ~Eye cream and lip conditioner are nice to have on hand too.THE BASIC RITUAL ~Night moisturizer for your particular skin type and seasonal need.
If you are not already acquainted with a skincare routine - Try to start your skincare plan at least six months to one year before your wedding day to ensure your skin is properly cared for and looking its best. You don’t want to wait until the month of your wedding to start using new products because you could develop an allergic reaction to some products which could take up to two months to clear. Or the opposite can occur and it could take 30-60 days for new products to really work their magic.
On the morning of your wedding, skip the lotions, toners or any products that will be between your skin and your makeup before you get your makeup done. Let your makeup artist do their complete skin prep (I DO THIS STEP FOR YOU) - this is optimal for a few reasons...mainly, they know their products and what skin products to use in coordination. This step will help your makeup adhere to your skin better with less chance of slippage when you start to get hot and sweat, because there is a fine line between a sweaty shine and a dewy glow. Be sure to let your makeup artist know about your skin concerns so that they may use additional products if necessary to help achieve the best application. Throughout the day and evening, avoid the temptation to apply too much pressed or loose powder to absorb shine because you will only cake on the powder, so use blotting sheets (oil absorbing papers) which are the best way to eliminate shine and not smudge your makeup. Sometimes even adding the simplest efforts to your routine can help your skin look more luminous:
drinking eight glasses of water daily, cutting back on caffeine and alcohol consumption, keeping a gentle and appropriate skincare routine (!), not stressing out about the little details before your wedding and getting plenty of rest the week of will help your skin glow and allow your makeup artist to make you into the beautiful blushing bride you dream of!

Lisa Johnson - Brides by Lisa: Posted on Saturday, September 04, 2010 12:20 PM
You Can Have Great Brows! ~ lisa johnson :: makeup artist As a professional makeup artist, I get a lot of questions about brow shaping. Nothing ages a face more than thin, overly tweezed brows - here are some general guidelines and tips to help you get a more perfect brow. Determine the Correct Shape Start the eyebrow shaping process by determining the correct design for your face and features. You will need an eyeliner pencil to start. First hold the pencil against the side of your nose, vertically, straight up to where it meets the brow. This is the spot where your eyebrow should start. As a guideline, make a small mark with the pencil there on your skin. Next you will turn the pencil at an angle, holding it against the nostril, so that it crosses over the center of your eye. Notice where the pencil now intersects the eyebrow, this is where the peak of your arch should start. Make another mark on your skin as a guide here. Lastly, keep moving the pencil at an angle against your nostril until it meets the edge of the outer eye. Where the end of the pencil now meets the eyebrow is your eyebrow’s ending point. Make another mark on your skin here. Using these three marks on both eyes provides you a general guideline on how the shape of your eyebrow should be based on the shape of your face. The other consideration for the correct eyebrow shape is the thickness. Ideally, the impact of your eyebrows should balance with the rest of your face and hair. If you have thick hair with larger facial features, your eyebrows should be thicker and more dramatic. In contrast, if you have thin hair and petite features, your eyebrows should be more subtle. TweezingBefore you begin your eyebrow shaping, gather all your tools – tweezers, brow brush and small scissors. Preferably, you should begin by checking to see if your eyebrows need a trim. Eyebrow hairs are longer than most people realize, and simply trimming them can be enough for some faces. When the hairs are lightly cut, not only will it decrease the brow density, it also helps the hairs to lie flat - instantly creating a clean line to your brow. Always trim before tweezing, not after, as you might end up removing some hairs that just needed to be trimmed. Start by brushing the eyebrow hairs straight up with your brow brush, and then trim any stray hairs that extend past the upper brow line. Next, brush all the hairs straight down and trim the hairs extending past the brow line underneath. After you have done your trimming, brush all the hairs back into place. Tweezing can be a painful process for some, so to ease the discomfort, you should pluck after a steamy shower or a warm face washing. This will help the pores to open and enable the hairs to remove easier. If you are particularly sensitive, slightly numbing the area with ice before tweezing will also help. Always make sure that you have good lighting when eyebrow shaping. Using the previous method for ensuring the proper shape, follow the marks and tweeze the hairs in the direction they grow. Move back and forth between the brows after every couple of plucks, to ensure proper symmetry. Filling in the Brow LineFor those of you with sparse eyebrows, tweezing is not necessary. Instead, you will need to build your eyebrows back to a proper shape. Selecting an appropriate pencil color is crucial, so test a few at the makeup counter to be sure the color is right. One of my favorite brands of pencil is Lancome Le Crayon Poudre. Many artists prefer to use an angled brush with brow/eyeshadow powder, myself included. You can also find eyebrow stencils and kits to help guide you with the correct line. These come in many shapes and sizes - Eyebrowz makes great stencils and kits for this purpose. Specific Tips - For pale or thin eyebrows, try tinting as it looks more natural than an eyebrow pencil. Just be sure to use a professional, licensed cosmetologist, and never try tinting at home. You don’t want to risk your eyesight, just for beauty!
- Embrace the natural shape of your eyebrows and don’t try to change them completely. You are born with the correct eyebrow shape for your face, so let it guide you.
- Preview the look of your eyebrows before shaping by hiding the hairs with a white eyeliner pencil.
- Avoid overdoing eyebrow shaping, as less is truly better. Thin eyebrows tend to make your face look instantly older.
- Tweezing is usually more effective than waxing as the wax process can lead to a change in the hair direction and skin texture if overused.
- Ultimately the point of eyebrow shaping is to adjust the viewer’s focus away from your eyebrows, to your eyes instead.
- While it is not preferred to completely change your eyebrow structure, you can make minor changes to what nature recommended in order to alter some eye appearances. For example, remove a few extra hairs from your eyebrows at the starting point to make close-set eyes appear wider.
Hire a Professional! If you are still nervous about eyebrow shaping, consider a professional brow session. The technique is not usually an expensive procedure, depending on the thickness and amount of hair to groom. At the very least, you can pay for one session and then simply pluck the stray hairs at home for maintenance.
